Many Digital Asset Manager users require the ability to buy and sell rights to media in such a way that they can combine them, reuse them, and make money in the process. Knowing what rights you own, and knowing what obligations you have regarding material you do not own, may be a key requirement for your organization. Other organizations may simply want to track IP rights associated with files. For example, some users may want to track information about images that are procured on CD and used in their Documentum Web Publishing system. Content may be licensed for a specific purpose only, and it is necessary to communicate this restriction to all potential users of the content within the organization.
The Digital Asset Manager IP rights management feature:
Communicates an IP right restriction to Digital Asset Manager users when a folder has content that is licensed for a particular purpose only. Only assets within a folder can be associated with IP rights.
Tracks content restrictions and usage. Users may customize restrictions and/or properties that can be used to provide usage information upon download of a file. Some restrictions and properties that may be used include the type of media where a file may be used, circulation restrictions, geographical restrictions, royalty fees, contract restrictions, copyright and licensing requirements, and source information.
Allows managers to apply an IP right to one or more files at the same time.
Enables users to view usage history of a file, for example, all instances that a file has been requested.
Carries forward IP rights assigned to a file when that file is used to create a new object through transformation, or a new sub-clip is created for the file.
The rights manager is a special user created with a specific role of configuring and creating IP rights in the repository. All other users are considered consumers of the IP rights model and have no special permission to change IP rights for any file. Any changes required by a consumer must be routed through the rights manager, which is facilitated by automatic workflow instances.
When logging in to Digital Asset Manager, you are presented with an option on the Login dialog: “I acknowledge that the usage of repository assets may be restricted. I agree to adhere to all rules defined in the IP Rights associated with any downloaded content”. Selecting this option means that you will not see any prompts concerning usage when attempting to use a file with IP rights.
